Answer:

unsolicited advice and opinion are always riskier than ones you've been asked to give. This isn't to say no one will ever get upset even if they're the one who asked, but in that situation you've got a fairly unassailable defense in case they do; they came to you, after all. My general policy has always been to respond to genuine inquiry with an honest answer. (Disingenuous inquiry, i.e. leading questions, obviously seeking a specific answer, or soliciting your opinion but only giving partial relevant information to limit/manipulate your potential replies, relaxes some of the moral obligations you would have in the situation. Often it's better not to answer at all in these situations, though there is something to be said for countering an attempt at casual deceit with uncomfortable truth when the opportunity presents itself.)
