The novel “Sunlight on a Broken Column” by Attia Hosain revolves around a muslim girl Laila who lost her family and living under the guidance of her grand father and her aunties.

They are highly orthodox family. She pursued western education by wearing purdah to his school.

After her grand father dead, she comes under the guidance of her father's elder brother Hamid who has liberal ideas.

He gave little freedom to everyone and so Laila went to college without purdah.

Then her friends and she involved in anti-government protests.

Her cousin Azad also involved in such protests.

She struggled for her own freedom as she thought that she had no freedom for action.

Then she falls in love with her poor family friend Ameer.

Her family didn’t support her. So she married Ameer against her family's wish.

After some years, Ameer died, which happened during the partion of India and Pakistan and their independence.

Then she turned towards the nationalist politics of India.

Here ends the novel with her loneliness.

Thus the novel brings some social changes.
