No, ideal should be not be able to thrive without the host. These parasites actually need their hosts for various needs some need them for food and some need the host for completing their life cycle. Natural selection did not lead to harmless parasites because then they would not survive. For their survival the parasites need to be harmful and through natural selection they evolve ways through which they can easily infect the host.

Organisms are available which thrive within host without harming it,but they are not ideal parasite.There is an example available in commensalism that bacteria inhabiting in gut of human without harming.Thus, you can say natural selection has lead to evolution of such totally harmless parasite
