Yes, elections promote democracy and is in fact the main pillar of democracy. Democracy means rule of people and it is the elections through which the people elect their representatives who later form the government and rule according to the wishes of people.

If the government does not act according to the wishes of the people, the people have the power to overthrow the same in next election and form the new government.

Elections encourage political debate, public dialogue and political participation. It ensures political parties to contest elections and form the government. Elections involve ordinary citizens to participate in political process and offers choice to citizens. It legitimizes the government or political authority.
