Yes, hunger was the source of motivation for the young seagull.
Explanation:
- In the story "His First Flight" by Liam O’ Flaherty, the young seagull was unable to fly like his parents and siblings. His fear took control over him and made him unable to even try out flying.
- He had to endure the rebuke of his siblings, prompting his parents to threaten him to try to fly or he'll starve.
- Moreover, after 24 hours of starving, he was so desperate for any form of food when he saw his mother tearing a piece of fish. She had seen him and was trying to help him get started.
- But she did not completely give in. Rather, she stayed some distance away from him for which he had to forget his fear and concentrate on his hunger.
- In his need to get the fish, he dived to get it when he felt himself fall down. Though fearing for his failure, the next moment, he was flying on his own wings. He felt the winds rushing against him, and then he realized that he is indeed flying on his own.
- It finally dawns on him that he is capable of flying like his siblings. His hunger had made him overcome his fear of flying.
