This, is a debatable question because there are many who feel that the book is better than the movie or vice versa.
But, my personal opinion is that good novels and stories can be adapted into excellent movies. But, this comes with a catch. Such movies can only fall into the category of brilliant when the screenplay, the direction, as well as capturing the essence of the book is very important. Admittedly, some parts of the book can't be captured, but, it's upto the director to which scenes should they pay attention to.
hence, by provision of the above argument, I rest my case.

Yes. If the original piece is spoken or acted out, then good films can be made from existing novels and stories.
