Explanation:

There were many reasons for the downfall of the Great Mughal Dynasty, but some issues hastened the process.

AURANGZEB’S INTOLENENT POLICIES :

Since Babur, the Mughals did a lot to make strong alliances and gain loyalties of the people, especially the Hindus. Aurangzeb, however was intolerant towards the Non-Muslims.

Aurangzeb imposed Jazia (A Tax on Hindu Pilgrims) and also forbade Hindus from celebrating their festivals. This deeply angered the Hindus and the Rajputs alike.

Being a Sunni Muslim himself, Aurangzeb was intolerant towards the Shias. This made the Shias turn against him.

He also owned enimity with the Marathas. The stories of Aurangzeb and Shivaji are still very famous.

He executed Guru Tegh Bahadur, the Sikh Guru. This angered the Sikh too.

Seeing that the Deccan India had a lot of wealth, he wanted to conquer it. But this in turn ruined the Mughal army and the Mughal treasury.

Aurangzeb was against singing, dancing and even drinking. The nobles who by this time were addicted to leisure didn't like it.

LAW OF SUCCESSION :

There was no specific way or law of succession of the throne. Hence, the death of every king led to a full fledged war between the sons to acquire the throne.

This in turn created anarchy. All the nobles of the court were divided and fought for their own interests, creating a weak Mughal court.

WEAK SUCCESSORS :

The successors of Aurangzeb were very incompetent. They spent most of their time in pleasure houses (Harems) and drinking. They soon lost power and control over state.

MORAL DEGRADATION :

The soldiers and the nobels by this time were addicted to pleasure and drinking. They wouldn't move anywhere without wine and women. This made them corrupt and inefficient. They only sided with the person who gave them more money, hence, were disloyal and easily accepted bribes.

DEGRADED ECONOMY :

A lot of money from the treasury was used up during succession wars and not much was added in after the wars. Also, the Mughal rulers, nobles and the soldiers spent money on their lavish living and built monuments and mansions for themselves. This destroyed the economic stability of the Mughal Empire.

DISINTEGRATION OF THE EMPIRE :

Due to the injustices being faced by the people, they decided to break off from under the domination of the Mughals. These included Rajputs, Jats, Sikhs and Marathas. They formed their own independent states and became a threat to the Mughal crown.

EUROPEANS AS TRADERS :

The Europeans came in during the time of Jahangir. Europeans specially the British, played an important role in the decline of the Mughal empire in India. They came in as traders and set up their ‘East India Company’. Later, they started interfering and meddling in Indian Politics. They set up their own empire in India which lasted for about 200 years.

Bahadur Shah Zafar, was the last Mughal Emperor in India. It was after the Revolt of 1857, where he became the nominal head of the Revolt, that he was exiled to Rangoon, Myanmar (then, Burma). This was the end of Mughal Rule in India, which was founded by Muhammad Babur in 1526.
