Whatever experience a person gets, is beneficial as people learn from their experiences. People should not be judged for their preferences.

In the case of Custard the dragon, he too wanted safety for himself. He had a distinct choice. He cried for a safe cage. That was his preference. The other pets made fun of him because he was a cry baby for them. He looked ferocious but was coward on the inside, according to them. However, the tables got turned because he was the only one to have enough courage to kill the pirate in the end.
