I don't think printed books will ever loose popularity or in your words, "importance."

e-books cannot substitute printed books no matter what.   what an e-book offers is nothing compared to The fresh smell of paper when you open a new book. Digitalisation does help us, but it should not take the spirit out of something. For me, sitting at the corner of my room with a book in my hands and coffee mug next to me, is the best feeling ever.

For those who look for convenience, e-book might be an option but nothing, absolutely nothing amounts to a printed book.
