When social divisions are combined with politics they become dangerous. There are a number of political parties in a democracy. If they start competing on the basis of the existing social divisions it will lead to political division. There will be conflict and violence. It may even lead to the disintegration of the country. For example Yugoslavia was divided into six independent countries.

But the combination of social divisions and politics is not always negative. When social divisions get a political expression the marginalised and disadvantaged social groups can express their grievances and ask the government to rectify them. The reservation of seats for the socially disadvantaged, in the legislature allows them to get an adequate representation in the decision making process.

some social differences result in social division, the division of one kind or another exist in many countries. Parties try to win political support by appealing to social division. but they don't need to be always dangerous.
