The play is based on the redemption of a lost soul . The convict who was arrested just because he stole money in order to buy food for his sick and starving wife , Jeannette . He was inhumanly treated with whips and lashes . All this had indeed hurt him gravely both emotionally and physically . This had made him lose all his faith in humanity . But the bishop's kindness and generosity had rekindled that hope in humans being more human than animals to him . Bishop had cared , loved and showed compassion to the mere beast and in fact turned him to a good person .
