The stiffness of the blood vessels helps in the circulation of the blood and actually blood itself provides sometimes the rigidity to the vessels as the blood also puts pressure especially in the arteries.

But it can also be due to some disorders like if the fats are accumulated in the vessels, they can also stiffen the vessels and in this way also increases the blood pressure.
