Condition of women did not remained same throughout the medieval period. Earlier, the condition of women was extremely bad. They had no right to property. They were praised if they burned themselves to death after their husband's death. The women who did so, even if forcefully, were called 'sati'. Women also had no access to education. In many parts of our nation, it was believed that if a women was educated, she will end being a widow. Widows were not even allowed to remarry.

However, after the action of reformers like Raja Rammohun Roy, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Swami Dayanand Saraswati and many more, improved the position of women in the society. Sati was banned in 1829 because of the efforts of Raja Rammohum Roy, and Ishwarchandra Vidhasagar contributed in the passing of widow remarriage law. He suggested that widows could remarry and supported his idea with ancient indian scripts. After that, the women also began to be educated and the position of women kept improving in the society.
