Answer:

The constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” These words of Benjamin Franklin rightly point out the role the constitution plays in an individual’s life.

Let’s first understand what the constitution represents from an analogy. Let’s assume India to be a big corporate, currently with 133.92 crores of employees spread across 3.287 million km2, with diversity in terms of culture, believes, etc. For such a diverse company to function smoothly without any conflicts, there has to be a set of norms that have to be followed. These norms are set in the form of a constitution in India. Now, like any company which defines its rules and norms following its vision, mission, and culture, India also adopted its constitution on 26th November 1949, keeping in mind its vision for the future as well as its diverse culture. To establish such norms and rules for such a diverse and large nation can take time and effort; hence, a seven-member the drafting committee was formed headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and it took three years to draft the constitution of India.

Now, like any company’s norms define how the company’s employees should and should not behave; similarly, the constitution plays the role of guiding the light towards the right path, the path towards the betterment of the entire society. And this brings us to what role does constitution plays affecting the lives of 133.92 crores. First, let’s talk about some of the salient features or as we say USP of any corporate laid down in its norms to rightly portray its unique culture:

1.) Well, rules for such a diverse nation can be lengthy, so India’s constitution is the longest written constitution in the world. It has a preamble, 448 articles, 25 groups, 12 schedules and five appendices.

2.) With time, any company grows, and hence there might be a change in its culture or vision, and the norms should be changed accordingly. Similarly, in the case of India’s constitution, it has been made flexible to incorporate any changes according to the need of society.

3.) The norms should clearly state the culture and vision of the company. So, the constitution has a preamble, which is well-drafted and clearly states out that India is a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic and always puts its people first.

4.) A well the stated policy of any company should clearly state what is it being expected from its employees and how should they behave; hence, the constitution of India clearly states the fundamental duties for its citizens.

These are a few of the long list of features that make India stand out from other nations. Constitution affects the lives of citizens of our country in numerous ways, clearly stating out the ways they should behave, but it only acts as a guiding light leading you towards the path to happiness, but the citizens must follow that path and work collectively towards the betterment of India. Here the importance of the top executives of the corporate, i.e. the lawmakers of India and those implementing it, becomes crucially important. Constitution also clearly states out the laws for decision-makers as well as implementers. So, it takes the collective efforts of the top executives (decision-makers), the middle management (decision implementers) and bottom line (the citizens) of the company (India) to make it a nation that will stand out from others.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar rightly said, “However good a Constitution may be, if those who are implementing it are not good, it will prove to be bad. However bad a Constitution may be, if those implementing it are good, it will prove to be good.”
