I’ve recently been reading a lot of Chinese history books for the past year. One of the books I’ve bought was probably aimed more for the people of academia, so it didn’t translate any Classical Chinese when quoting from ancient documents. That book was essentially unreadable to me; I hardly understood anything written in it. On the other hand, most of the Chinese history books I’ve read were written for the general public; in these types of books, when they quote verbatim from the ancient text and books, very often the author would have to translate the original text (which was written in Classical Chinese) to vernacular Chinese.
