well actually I don't know what story u r speaking of, but the one I know of the similar name, where the old man had 2 goats, 1 cat and 4 pairs of doves, the man there needed to leave the town because of war.

According to this story yes if the man would have been selfish and have not cared of his animals he must have left them and lived his remaining life peacefully.

But as the man had no one except the animals as his family, he was cared for them and so stayed for them...

but changing his fate was in his hand.
