During the Second World War, the British had put most of the leading Congress leaders in prison. The Muslim League under Jinnah had used the oportunity to cosy up witht he British to press the demand for Pakistan. The British also collaborated with Jinnah to impose new hurdles in the path to independence. As a result, the country became polarized along communal lines making partition inevitable.
