Do you think the seagull was not ready to fly due to lenient treatment by his family in the beginning? What made him fly later on? What is the role of motivation in learning?

Answer:

Spare the rod and spoil the child:

Yes, this is a true statement. When fear engulfs a person, there can be no forward movement. This has been clearly depicted in the story, ‘The First Flight’. The little seagull despite a lot of pampering by the mother refused to budge and fly. It was so scared of the sea beneath and was sure it would fall.

The mother left him to fend for himself and flew off with the other little seagulls. The seagull was consumed by hunger and despite repeated screaming, the mother did not turn around. She then brought a piece of fish close to the ledge and just as the little seagull reached for it, the mother flew away.

The young one flew too, without realizing that it was flying. Only on seeing the sea beneath it realized that it was flying. This clearly brings to light the fact that some motivation is required to acquire learning and just mollycoddling will not help the children. Firmness is required to elicit action.
