No i do not think the snake was concious about the poet's presence. In which the snake acts shows that it had no idea of the poet's presence. It gave no importance to his being there. It looked at the poet vaguely.

No. I don't think that the snake was conscious about the poet's presence at all. The snake was totally oblivious of the poet's presence around him. This is revealed from the fact that he raised his head while drinking water and looked around vaguely just like cattle do when drinking water.
