•Following this principle, the Sinhalese community after winning elections and capturing power declared Sinhala as the official language in the year 1956.
• Policies were framed for giving preference to Sinhala government and university jobs.
•These elections worsened the relationship between the Sinhalese and the tamils.As a result the Tamils started a struggle for the recognition of Tamil as an official language,resulted in civil war.
• It has caused a great setback to social political and economic life.
