The Boy Who Broke the Bank

In my opinion the town residents show no concern for workers like Nathu, the sweeper boy.

Explanation:

  • The short story 'The Boy Who Broke the Bank' by Ruskin Bond relates to the problem of miscommunication.
  • Through the character Nathu ,he reflects how fatal and disastrous the grapevine mode of communication is.
  • Nathu is a poor sweeper boy. He works for the wealthy banker Seth Govind Ram at Pipalnagar town.
  • Though the bank runs extremely well, Nathu is not paid his wages on time.
  • This causes him to complain aloud to himself about the bank.
  • Some of the town residents over hear him. They misinterpret his murmuring and grumblings and take it for granted that the Bank is in a bad condition.
  • This misunderstanding takes the shape of a rumour and spreads like wild fire.
  • None of the townsfolk are compassionate towards Nathu.
  • They are a selfish lot interested only in their own investments.
  • None of them spare a thought for Nathu. Instead they flock to the Bank and damage it demanding their savings.
  • Thus I think that  the town residents will show no concern for workers like Nathu, the sweeper boy .

Answer:

no, the town residents did not show any concern for workers like nathu, the sweeper boy. while the entire town protested against the bank going insolvent, everyone forgot about nathu whose delayed pay had led to the speculation in the first place.on being probed, the clerks admitted that they have had their salaries. it was a few of the part time workers who were getting paid late.
