It is nowhere mentioned if the story is inspired from a real life episode or is a mere work of fiction. But at the same time the story does narrate the incidents very similar to that of the real life. Mrs. Pumphrey is like an over protective parent, who can't say no to Tricki. This excess of love and care spoils him. Tricki doesn't realize his natural way of living until he lives with the other dogs in the surgery. Excess of anything in life is a bane, even if done in good faith. Mrs. Pumphrey would have never intended to cause harm to Tricki, but her extra possessiveness for him does cause him issues. It was her responsibility to take actions that would do him good. Even if that causes him some displeasure for the time being, it would be better in the long run.
