I think that "Triumph of surgery" is a mixture of both real life and fiction. It maybe possible for rich people to overfeed their pets out of love. It is not unusual for them to maintain a vast wardrobe for them either. On the other hand it is unusual for a doctor to consume the dog's food in the name of health. Also I think it is unlikely that a dog can lose so much weight in a short period of time.
