The punishment given to convict was obviously not justified. He just stole food for his dying wife and he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. They lashed him, chained him, beat him, he was made to eat on filth and he also slept on boards for continuously 10 years. This punishment was not justified for such a petty crime.
The convict wanted to go to Paris so that he could live his life peacefully as police would not be able to find him there and he would also be unknown to everyone there.
