Morphine is actually a pain killer and as you mentioned is also a sedative. it suppresses the pain receptors at the place of injury which prevents the transfer of message through the form of electrical impulses to the brain which creates a numbness at the place of injury (in this case wound after a surgery). The use of pain killers such as morphine creates a feeling of satisfaction to the brain. so brain secretes a hormone called dopamine which is also called as the happiness hormone. so as the usage persists brain slowly starts getting used to morphine as a habit. so if it is not used it creates a disturbance in the brain so the person will crave for the drug. To overcome seductive drugs like morphine certain medications such as SUBOXONE are given.

I hope this helps you
