Answer:
Fats often get a lot of bad press but in fact are very important for our overall health, our hormones, our sex drive and our energy levels, in particular.
There is a large amount of confusion on what types of fat we should eat and which we shouldn’t and this applies in particular to animal fats. Therefore, I hope this article can help to clear things up.
Humans have eaten animal fat for years and we have survived pretty well up to now. However, admittedly, at times, animal fats CAN be bad for you.
When? Well one really useful thing to consider is, when the animal was alive, what did it eat?
Some animals will eat lots of toxins in their lifetime (mainly found in the poor food they are fed).
When this happens those toxins are stored in the animal’s fat cells, and when we come to eat that animal those toxins are still stored in the fat in the meat.
Obviously, minimising the toxins that anyone puts in their body is really important, but this is especially critical for someone whose health is already compromised from suffering from Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis.
This doesn’t apply to all meat obviously; some are much worse than others…
As an example, pigs are generally fed pretty much anything and everything when they are alive. This ultimately leads to the meat (especially bacon) being of lower quality, with high levels of toxins in the fat. Therefore, when eating bacon, it’s well worth strimming off the fat.
But, if you compare that to something like a grass-fed steak, where the animal won’t have been fed a lot of rubbish throughout its life, then the fats within it will generally be fine, and are perfectly healthy for you.
Therefore, rather than worrying about if you should be eating animal fat or not (in general you should as long as it’s the right kind), then pay more attention to the quality of the meat you are eating.
Don’t label everything that same. Instead give some thought to what you are eating has eaten…and eat the things that ate well
