Correct Question:

Doctrine of Lapse was initiated by ______.

Answer:

Doctrine of Lapse was initiated by Lord Dalhousie.

Lord Dalhousie who was the Governor-General from 1848 to 1856, devised a new policy that came to be known as Doctrine of Lapse.

The doctrine declared that if an Indian ruler died without a male heir, then his kingdom would lapse; i.e. become a part of the Company's territory.

Kingdoms annexed by the Company after initiating the Doctrine of Lapse were:

  • Satara in 1848
  • Sambalpur in 1850
  • Udaipur in 1852
  • Nagpur in 1853
  • Jhansi in 1854

Finally in 1856, the Company also took over Awadh. This time they said that Awadh was taken over due to the "misgovernment" of the Nawab.
