Explanation -:

I wish.

In 1957, when I was 13, I volunteered my services as a self-styled expert in everything electrical to the local radio shop in a country town of population 500 in north-eastern New South Wales. A customer had a questionable battery, which I thought to test by measuring its current. Wham! That seriously “pegged the needle”.

So no, ammeters do not have high resistance, much as I would have preferred otherwise in retrospect. The shop owner wasn’t too happy either.
