Does a coolie do work when he carry luggage from one platform to another ? And if work is not done by him why do we pay him?

A coolie does work when he carry luggage from one platform to another in spite of any method he tries to move the luggage. He displaces the luggage from its initial position to a new position and thus work is done.

He obviously does work for what we pay for it to him.

Coolie do work while he carries luggage from one platform to other as his muscular energy is used, luggage is heavy too, so energy is used as well, and work us not done as there is no displacement but force is applied, and also when he picks up and put down the luggage, work is done, for what we pay him.
