Alpha particles are positively charged and are therefore attracted to the negative plate in an electric field. ... The "current" (second finger flow of charged particles) is the beam of radiation. Remember, the second finger shows conventional current so for beta particles point it in the reverse direction to the beam.

In a vacuum a beam of ions or electrons may be formed . In other conductive material, the electric current due to flow of both positively and negatively charged particles at the same time . In still others , the current is entirely due to position charge flow......
