electric field will be always perpendicular to electric potential.
potential difference come in existence only if charge is moved in electric field direction (opposite or along) , or if at an angle then it's component along the E will give difference in potential.
And moving perpendicular to E we will have always equipotential surface .
so for constant potential electric field must be perpendicular to potential.
