No, according to me, Carole doesn't understand the terms "race" & "mulatto" as she is is a young kid. The Nortons shouldn't had asked her about her family. How are they, why are they,etc. Are they Negro? Are they black? etc.

When Carole had seen the Nortons, she describe Mr. Norton as tanned man.
