In human anatomy, the abductor pollicis longus (APL) is one of the extrinsic muscles of the hand.
As the name implies, its major function is to abduct the thumb at the wrist.
Its tendon forms the anterior border of the anatomical snuffbox

Answer:
Abductor pollicis brevis performs the function of assisting the abductor pollicis longus muscle in abductiing the thumb at the wrist joint.
So in case of damage to Abductor pollicis brevis, Abductor pollicis longus is still able to perform the task of abduction.
So it will not affect long term movement of the thumb.
Hope you will be able to understand.
