Quarks were introduced as parts of an ordering scheme for hadrons, and there was little evidence for their physical existence until deep inelastic scattering experiments at the Stanford Linear Accelerator CenterQuarks is a reality, does not violate quantization but asserts that they always occur in combinations giving 0, +e or -e. At still finer level there could be more complex nature and string theorists are investigating these. But that does not contradict the lumping in terms of quarks at the observable scale.Quarks are not mostly possible of free existence that makes up for one reason why we mostly quantise charge in terms of electron.
