Genetic variation is essential for natural selection because natural selection can only increase or decrease frequency of alleles that already exist in the population. Genetic variation is caused by: mutation. random mating between organisms

The environment is responsible for genetic variations too.

For example if a group of organism is geologically away from a subgroup of the same species then they are likely to evolve differently. At a particular time they can become so different that they form a complete different species due to continuous development of variations.

Each organism tries to adapt to its dynamic environment due to which it has to develop certain changes in its gene by natural selection.

Thus genetic variation largely depends on environment.
