Electric current in the wire is due to flow of electrons. When these flowing electrons bump into atoms in the wire, they transfer some of their kinetic energy to them which heats up thewire. Because of resistance, the more its a conductor the less it would beheated and vice versa.

When an electric current is passed through a conductor, the conductorbecomes hot after some time and produces heat. This happens due tothe conversion of some amount of electric energy, passing through the conductor, into heat energy. ... Theresistance, R of the conductor.
