Fathers are heterometic, that is they produce two types of germs, gymnosperms (22+X) and androsperms (22+Y). If gymnosperm (22+X) fertilises the ovum (22 + X), the sex of new born child will be female (44 + XX). If androsperm (22 + Y) fuses with ovum (22 + X), the new born child will be boy (44 + XY).

Men determine the sex of a baby depending on whether their sperm is carrying an X or Y chromosome. An X chromosome combines with the mother's X chromosome to make a baby girl (XX) and a Y chromosome will combine with the mother's to make a boy (XY).
