Does homeostasis mean the same thing as balance? I know I could've looked this up.

It refers to the tendency in which higher organisms or animals regulate or maintain internal cell environment irrespective of the fluctuations of external cell environment. The cells of the living organism maintain homeostasis by actively and appropriately monitoring the internal cellular conditions when they diverge from their optimal levels and therefore initiating self correction.
