Because light travels through air in a nearly perfectly straight line:


The light travels from the top of the tree, straight through the pinhole, and straight to the BOTTOM of the image.

yes, Light travels from the bottom of the tree, straight through the pinhole, and straight to the TOP of the image.

Thus the image is inverted. Left and right are reversed for the same reason.
