Yes it happens..
In Einstein's theories he mentioned that the planets with huge mass cause a bend in the space time fabric. The light having almost no mass bends with the curves in the fabric.
(if you don't understand about the space time fabric, just think about a cloth being stretched from all sides (like we do in a trampoline) and you just keep a heavy ball or any heavy object on it. You can see a curve in the cloth which is similar to the space time curve).
