A freely suspended magnet always points towards the north- south direction...hence,it is non magnetic material

Its true that a pencil sharpener is made up of plastic, but the blade which helps us to sharpen the pencil is made up of iron or some metal and as metal being a magnetic substance, gets attracted to the magnet.
