Photosynthesis can only take place in green plants, because they contain a special green pigment called chlorophyll on their surface. Not only leaves but, stems of some plants contain chlorophyll which can help them in this process.

For eg - In the leaves of mushroom there is no green leaves so it cannot carry on photosynthesis

But in the stem's of cactus plant the stem can carry on photosynthesis because it has pigment chlorophyll

And mostly greens leaves have chlorophyll so they are also called Food factory of plants
