I think much is made about nothing. If it is appropriate to cite your own work you should do it. Ignore everything else. Should it be evaluated? There are instances of abuse but in the end...no one really cares. Also, if you are publishing good articles in good journals that reference your own work..they have already gone through peer review... following a series of papers from a given author in a hot topic is incredibly important to follow the thread of the thinking. I return to the notion... quit thinking about the nuances of citation..it is interfering with good science. Do the right thing!
