Yes, sustainable development can make medium- and long-term economic sense for the society. However, for this to happen, a couple of factors have to be considered.

# Non-renewable resources should be used only when absolutely needed. This is because such resources are becoming more and more scarce with each passing day. As a result, the price of such resources are also increasing. Some examples are oil and metals.

# Human activities that trigger the need for environmental restoration, cleanup and decontamination must be reduced. This is because such activities involve a lot of expenditure and a drain on the economy.

# Renewable resources must be utilized appropriately. Some of these resources are biological resources, fishery and forest products.

Certainly, sustainable development makes economic sense to the society. In our aim towards sustainable development, we will be mindful of the use of resources and try to conserve them so as not to leave the earth bereft of its resources for the coming generations. When people learn to value resources and allow nature to replenish them then it will surely make an impact.
It will also bring down the consumption levels by developed nations which contribute more to the degradation of the environment.
