Does the intruder succed in mundering gerrad. Why?

The intruder plans to kill Gerrard and take his place because they were look alikes . But he did not succeed in his plan because Gerrard made him believe that Gerrard himself too has killed someone . So the Intruder thought that if he took Gerrard's place then also he will be punished . So it was better not to kill him.
