Does the magnesium 2+ ion prefer an octet or more?

magnesium has atomic number is 12
Mg2+means that it is in deficiency of 2 electrons .
electronic configuration of Mg2+ is 1s2 2s2 2p6
therefore it completes its octet in its valence shell
