Similar is the case with C, It needs 4 more electrons for which it has a tendency to form either 4 single bonds, 2 double bonds or one single and one triple bond. Now, in water, i.e. H2O, oxygen is the central atom and can either form one double or two single bonds.

Before solving question we should know the following terms :-

What is covalent bond?

The chemical molecule formed by sharing of electron is called Coovalent bond.

Here, no transfer of electrons occurs unlike ionic bond means no donation or receiving of electrons occurs. Here only negative charges ( non-metal) form bond.

The sharing should be done in such a way that both the elements got their electric configuration as that of nearest inert gas.

TYPES OF COOVALENT BOND

  • Single Coovalent Bond

Here one pair of electron ( 2 electron) is shared.

e.g. HCl

H - Cl

Here chlorine shares one electron to hydrogen for achieving configuration of Helium (Inertness) while hydrogen gave an electron for chlorine to achieve argon.

  • Double Coovalent Bond

Here two pair of electron get shared between the electro-negative elements.

e.g. Oxygen Gas (O2)

O: : 2

Both oxygen shares two pair of electron(4) to achieve inertness of Neon.

e.g. Carbon-dioxide (CO2)

O: :C : :O

Here each oxygen got a single pair of electron from carbon for achieving neon while carbon get 4 electrons and got inertness of same Neon.

  • Triple - Covalent Bond

Here 3 pair of electrons is shared between the elements.

e.g. Nitrogen Molecule (N2)

N ≡ N

Here Nitrogen got three electrons from other one to achieve inertness of Neon of atomic number 10.

WATER ( H20)

It is covalent bond formed by two hydrogen argon and one oxygen atom.

It is a single covalent bond where each hydrogen get one electron from Oxygen so as to achieve inertness of Helium having atomic number 2 and Oxygen get one one electron from each hydrogen for getting inertness of Neon.

H - O - H

This is what Dihydrogen-Oxygen (Water)
