No. Most compasses are balanced so they rotate in the plane perpendicular to the acceleration of gravity. Basically they rotate parallel to the ground.
The magnetic field is usually not ever parallel. You need a compass that can rotate in any direction. Then it will point parallel to the field direction.
As an example, in North America, the magnetic field of the earth points downwards and northish. But your compass just points northish. The farther north you go the more it points downwards. It points more parallel to the ground at the equator.
Also, of course, if there is another torque on the compass needle it could point in a different direction completely.
