That's depends upon the patient condition. But the main purpose of the artificial respiration is to supply oxygen "temporary".

The primary condition when the patient is given artificial source permanently when he is unable to breath ( this happen mainly in coma condition) on his own.
Otherwise generally patient is placed on ventilator when there is chance of recovery in the future or the patient can take breath on his own in future or the patient is just having the difficulty in breathing.
So the role of ventilator is just 'supportive'.
