Baking soda(NaHCO₃) is a mild basic salt. So, it has the same function as that of a toothpaste.(but a little stronger)

Now,

When we eat some food and do not clean it, bacteria settle on it and release acids to digest the food. Thus, the pH of our mouth goes below 5.6.

So, the sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the excess acid .
